NWS N. Ind. downgrades winter storm watch to winter weather advisory

Updated forecasts this morning indicated that an approaching storm system will create less snowfall than previously forecast. The northern Indiana office of the National Weather Service (NWS)  therefore replaced the Winter Storm Watch it issued yesterday with a set of new and less serious Winter Weather Advisories.

The advisories indicate that three to five inches of snow will fall, with snowfall rates of up to one half inch per hour reducing visibilities to one half mile or less.

Below is a list of counties in office’s county warning area (CWA) and the effective times of the Winter Weather Advisory for that county.

NWS northern Indiana issues YouTube briefing on winter storm

The northern Indiana office of the National Weather Service issued a multimedia briefing this evening on a winter storm that is forecast to affect northern Indiana, southern Lower Michigan and northwestern Ohio Monday evening and Tuesday morning.

The office also sent an email message to alert local emergency managers and news media to the forecast of accumulating snowfall of three to six inches Monday night. Some areas along and south of U.S. 30 could see five to eight inches.

Snowfall is forecast to begin between 7 p.m.  and 10 p.m. Monday and end between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Tuesday.

A winter storm watch remains in place, taking effect at 7 p.m. Monday and ending at 7 a.m., 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Tuesday, depending on location.

Winter Storm Watch for northern Ind., southern Lower Mich., NW Ohio

The National Weather Service northern Indiana office has issued a Winter Storm Watch for nearly all of the 37 counties it serves, including Allen County, Indiana. The watch takes effect at 7 p.m. Monday evening and runs until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Three to six inches of snow are likely, with five to eight inches possible. Snowfall rates Monday night of up to one inch per hour could reduce visibilities to 1/4 mile or less.
