Winter Storm Warning: 6-10″ of snow plus significant blowing, drifting

NWS winter storm warning infographic

The National Weather Service infographic above provides a good synopsis of the Winter Storm Warning that covers most of the forecast area of the northern Indiana NWS office. The full statements appear below. Notice that after the introduction, it has three sections, so search for the section that covers your county (I’ve highlighted the section that covers the immediate Fort Wayne area).

To stay informed about this storm as it arrives, monitor the Twitter feed of the NWS northern Indiana office (which you can do by clicking here, even if you don’t have a Twitter account), the office’s Facebook page (which is also viewable to people who don’t have Facebook accounts) and/or the office’s Web page. As time permits between work projects, etc. I will also add posts to this blog to share information I find. The best way to see those is to click the SKYWARN/Severe Wx tab above, bookmark the page that comes up, and check it periodically. You can also sign up for email updates at the top of the right-hand column, but those updates go out only once per day.

Revised Winter Storm Watch slightly reduces maximum snowfall

At 10:27 p.m. EST, the northern Indiana office of the National Weather Service (NWS) issued an updated Winter Storm Watch, which reads pretty much the same as previous versions, with one small exception. The latest version of the watch (see below) reduces the maximum snowfall forecast by an inch to a storm total of nine inches. As for when or if the NWS might replace the watch with a warning, meteorologists say they’ll take another look at the situation during the overnight shift to decide whether the change the snowfall forecast and whether or when to upgrade the watch to a warning.

NWS revises snowfall forecast for coming winter storm

NWS infographic on winter storm watch

The northern Indiana office of the National Weather Service (NWS) published the above inforgraphic this afternoon to communicate meteorologists’ latest thoughts on the magnitude of the incoming winter storm. As you can see, they’ve revised the snowfall forecast to four to seven inches for much of the forecast area and seven to 10 inches for the remainder of the area. The dividing line appears to go from southwest to northeast right through the center of Allen County. The NWS tweeted that forecasters will be looking at latest computer model runs this evening and tonight and might thereafter issue additional updates to the winter storm watch. The latest version of the watch appears below.

Confidence high in at least 6 inches

NWS logo

A National Weather Service meteorologist just advised that they have high confidence that northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio will receive at least six inches of snow from Tuesday’s storm (the one for which they issued a Winter Storm Watch this morning). Confidence this morning is low to moderate that we’ll get the higher amounts around 10 inches.
