Increased flood potential through late February

Past flooding near Willshire, Ohio (NWS photo)

The northern Indiana office of the National Weather Service has issued a Hydrologic Outlook that explains an increased risk of flooding in northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio. As the outlook explains, it’s too early to issue a flood watch or warning, but flooding is possible. So people who live in flood-prone areas should be prepared for flooding and monitor official forecasts over the next couple weeks.

Here’s the verbatim statement:

HYDROLOGIC OUTLOOK
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORTHERN INDIANA
415 AM EST FRI FEB 14 2014 /315 AM CST FRI FEB 14 2014/

...INCREASED FLOOD POTENTIAL INTO LATE FEBRUARY...

SEVERAL FACTORS WILL COMBINE TO CREATE AN INCREASED FLOOD RISK
STARTING LATE NEXT WEEK AND CONTINUING THROUGH THE END OF
FEBRUARY. WIDESPREAD SNOW AND ICE CONTAIN A LARGE QUANTITY OF
STORED WATER...GENERALLY 1.5 TO 3.5 INCHES ACROSS THE REGION. A
WINTRY MIX WILL DEVELOP EARLY MONDAY AND LIKELY CHANGE TO ALL
RAIN BY MONDAY AFTERNOON ACROSS SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE
AREA. A WINTRY MIX MAY PERSIST INTO MONDAY AFTERNOON ACROSS
NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE AREA. THIS PRECIPITATION WILL FURTHER ADD
TO THE AMOUNT OF WATER LOCKED IN PLACE BY THE SNOW COVER.

A WARM-UP WILL ALSO COMMENCE BY THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK AND
LIKELY CONTINUE INTO NEXT WEEKEND THAT WILL RESULT IN MELTING OF
THE SNOWPACK ACROSS THE AREA. INCREASED RUNOFF FROM THIS MELTING
SNOW ATOP THE FROZEN GROUND WILL LEAD TO A HEIGHTENED POTENTIAL
FOR FLOODING IN LOW LYING AREAS...BASEMENTS AND SMALL STREAMS AND
CREEKS. SIGNIFICANT RISES ALONG MAJOR STEM RIVERS COULD FOLLOW.

SHOULD A SIGNIFICANT RAIN EVENT OCCUR DURING THIS WARMER
PERIOD...THE POTENTIAL FOR...AND THE SEVERITY OF...RESULTANT
FLOODING WOULD GREATLY INCREASE. THE POTENTIAL FOR BREAK UP AND
DOWNSTREAM MOVEMENT OF THICK ICE ON RIVERS WOULD INCREASE THE
RISK FOR ICE JAMS TO DEVELOP AND FURTHER EXACERBATE THE FLOODING
RISK.

FUTURE FLOODING IS A POSSIBILITY AT THIS TIME...NOT A CERTAINTY.
IF YOU LIVE IN A FLOOD PRONE AREA...NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE
FOR POSSIBLE FLOODING. STAY ALERT TO THE LATEST FORECASTS TRENDS
OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS BY VISITING WEATHER.GOV/IWX.

Reminder: SKYWARN storm spotter training

Photo of SKYWARN storm spotter at work

The first of two SKYWARN storm spotter training sessions in the Fort Wayne area happens Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at Columbia City High School, 600 N. Whitley St., Columbia City, Ind.

Everyone is welcome. The training will help participants learn how to identify tornadoes and other severe weather phenomena and how to report them to the National Weather Service (NWS) to aid in public safety. You do not need to be ham radio operator. Spotters who are not hams can make reports via telephone or social media.

Registration is not required but is highly recommended.  Why? If a winter storm requires the NWS to cancel the training, registrants will receive notification via email. If you don’t register, you risk wasting a trip to Columbia City.

To register for the Columbia City session, follow this link.

The National Weather Service requests that all participants complete online storm spotter training before attending a live training session. If you completed the online training last year and are confident that you remember the material, it is not necessary to view the online training again this year.

To view the two modules of the online spotter training course, follow this link.

The NWS will not conduct a spotter training session in Fort Wayne in 2014. If you are unable to attend the Columbia City session, the next session close to Fort Wayne happens Monday, March 17, at 6 p.m. (note the earlier starting time), at Wells County Community Center, 1240 S. 4-H Road, Bluffton, Ind.

To register for the Bluffton session, follow this link.

If you have questions about SKYWARN spotter training, contact Michael Lewis, the warning coordination meteorologist at National Weather Service northern Indiana weather forecast office.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NORTHERN INDIANA HAS ISSUED A
WIND CHILL ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 8 PM EST /7 PM CST/
THIS EVENING TO NOON EST /11 AM CST/ FRIDAY.

Snow crews work around the clock at Fort Wayne International Airport

Craig Williams, Director of Operations & Facilities, was managing the snow removal crew Wednesday morning at Fort Wayne International Airport.

Using two radios, one for the tower, and one for his crew, he managed to keep his men working and still allow aircraft to come and go. Two long radio cords stretched across his leg to his lap where two identical radio mikes for transmitting and receiving rested.

“I already called the wrong radio twice,” Williams said with a laugh.

All joking aside what the crew was doing is serious business, they were working on keeping the runways open. The crew, whose shift started at 3 a.m., was using three snowplows, three brushes and two blowers. In a staggered formation, snowplow, brush, snowplow, brush, snowplow, brush, they roared up and down the landing strips.
